Kandinsky Museo Guggenheim Bilbao As a pioneer of abstraction and a renowned aesthetic theorist, Vasily Kandinsky (b. 1866, Moscow; d. 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France) is among the foremost artistic innovators of the early twentieth century. He endeavored to free painting from its ties to the natural world, and in so doing he discovered a new subject matter based solely on the artist’s “inner necessity” that would occupy him throughout his life. Drawn primarily from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s rich holdings, this comprehensive exhibition of paintings and works on paper traces Kandinsky’s aesthetic evolution and spans his entire oeuvre. |

The Museum’s website offers timely information of any changes that may occur While the Museum is closed to visitors, staff members continue working internally in order to accompany the public in these challenging times, increasing the content about the art program and offering it through our web and social media. A pioneer in abstraction, Lygia Clark (b. 1920, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; d. 1988, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was a major artist of the second half of the twentieth century. Lygia Clark: Painting as an Experimental Field, 1948–1958 presents a reexamination of Clark’s crucial formative years from 1948 to 1958, when she was experimenting between figuration and abstraction to articulate the compelling visual language that defined her mature production. Along with a pertinent representation of her early figurative work, this exhibition assembles paintings from major series created during this early period to provide a fundamental overview of the first decade of Clark’s artistic career. Viewing painting as an “experimental field,” a phrase from a keynote lecture given by the artist in 1956, Clark sought to redefine the medium by pushing the boundaries of traditional painting. Dedicating herself to art without formal training, she embedded herself within the artistic milieu of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1940s and participated in seminal artistic movements, such as Concrete art and geometric abstraction, throughout the 1950s. This focused exhibition traces Clark’s artistic evolution in three structured historical sections: “The Early Years, 1948–1952;” “Geometric Abstraction, 1953–1956;” and “Variation of Form: Modulating Space, 1957–1958.” Each chapter addresses Clark’s most significant ideas and provides an in-depth representation of her artistic development through a concise selection of works. This presentation of Lygia Clark’s early practice debuts on the centenary anniversary of the artist’s birth, bringing a renewed attention at an international level to a significant postwar Latin American female artist. The museum is thankful to the Lygia Clark Cultural Association, Rio de Janeiro, and the artist’s heirs for their tremendous support of the exhibition. Curator: Geaninne Gutiérrez-Guimarães |

THE MENIL COLLECTION PRESENTS PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE SURREAL IMAGINATION
THE MENIL COLLECTION PRESENTS PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE SURREAL IMAGINATION Events During Houston’s FotoFest Biennial 2020 Include Talks by Artist Allison Janae HOUSTON, TEXAS, February 24, 2020 – Drawn from the Menil Collection’s renowned holdings of Surrealist art and from extraordinary loans from Houston collections, the exhibition Photography and the Surreal Imagination is on view at the Menil Collection now through June 14, 2020. |

Richard Artschwager The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Dates: 29 February – 10 May, 2020 Museo Guggenheim Bilbao Following the recommendations issued by health authorities and the directions of the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Biscay, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will close temporarily to visitors effective March 14 until further notice as a way to contribute to contain the spread of COVID-19. For the Museum, the safety of our visitors, our staff, and our collaborators is a top priority. In this context and as a precaution, all programs and activities have already been canceled. The Museum’s website offers timely information of any changes that may occur While the Museum is closed to visitors, staff members continue working internally in order to accompany the public in these challenging times, increasing the content about the art program and offering it through our web and social media. Halfway between painting and sculpture, Artschwager develops a unique language using the new domestic materials of his time, always working toward the fusion of figuration and abstraction, artistic innovation and design, and ironically seeks to combine the functional and the useless. Designed as an open labyrinth, the exhibition features a comprehensive selection of paintings and sculptures dating from the early 1960s to the first decade of this century. Artschwager represents places, scenes from everyday life, and common objects such as tables, chairs, and dressers, interpreting them in ordinary, standardized industrial materials such as Formica, Celotex, acrylic paint, and rubberized horsehair. Artschwager’s work continually questions appearance and essence, offering us a delicate and realistic, humorous yet monumental interpretation of the world. |

Picasso Through the Lens of David Douglas Duncan GALERIE HAUSER & WIRTH
Picasso Through the Lens of David Douglas Duncan 3 February – 28 February 2020 Opening reception: Sunday 2 February 2020 2 – 5 pm Opening at Vieux Chalet in Gstaad on the 2 February 2020, ‘Picasso Through the Lens of David Douglas Duncan’ gives a remarkable insight into the work and life of Picasso. Ceramics and paintings by the artist are presented in tandem with vintage photographs taken by the legendary photographer David Douglas Duncan during a period of unprecedented access to the artist’s studio. The works on view, created concurrently with the photographs, can be encountered as an ‘intervention’ throughout the domestic spaces of the chalet. The photographs, some of which have never been exhibited before, give an intimate portrait of the artist at work and at home. The project has been organised in close collaboration with the artist’s son, Claude Picasso, and James Koch, Partner at Hauser & Wirth. David Douglas Duncan was a renowned war photographer, photojournalist, and a self-described nomad. He was among the most influential photographers of the last century, capturing World War II, the Vietnam War, and photo essays for Life magazine which enabled him to roam the world. The resulting images filled more than 25 books, including eight on Picasso. Duncan’s first encounter with Picasso happened in February 1956 when he infamously rang the doorbell of La Californie, Picasso’s home in Cannes. The artist’s wife, Jacqueline, led him upstairs and he met Picasso in his bathtub, who allowed Duncan to photograph him. From that starting point, the photographer developed a lasting friendship with Picasso over the course of 17 years during which time he captured an astounding visual archive of the artist’s life at La Californie. |

Dora Maar Tate Modern London
Dora Maar Tate Modern presents the first UK retrospective of the work of Dora Maar (1907–97) whose provocative photographs and photomontages became celebrated icons of surrealism. Featuring over 200 works from a career spanning more than six decades, this exhibition shows how Maar’s eye for the unusual also translated to her commercial commissions, social documentary photographs, and paintings – key aspects of her practice which have, until now, remained little known. Born Henriette Théodora Markovitch, Dora Maar grew up between Argentina and Paris and studied decorative arts and painting before switching her focus to photography. In doing so, Maar became part of a generation of women who seized the new professional opportunities offered by advertising and the illustrated press. Tate Modern’s exhibition opens with the most important examples of these commissioned works. Around 1931, Maar set up a studio with film set designer Pierre Kéfer specialising in portraiture, fashion photography and advertising. Works such as The years lie in wait for you c.1935 – believed to be an advertising project for face cream that Maar made by overlaying two negatives – reveal Maar’s innovative approach to constructing images through staging, photomontage and collage. Striking nude studies such as that of famed model Assia Granatouroff also reveal how women photographers like Maar were beginning to infiltrate relatively taboo genres such as erotica and nude photography. |

THE JEAN-PAUL GETTY MUSEUM LOS ANGELES PRESENTS MANET AND MODERN BEAUTY
First major museum exhibition to focus on Édouard Manet’s late work, featuring more than 90 At the Getty Museum, Getty Center LOS ANGELES—Édouard Manet (1832-1883) is best known today for provocative, large-scale paintings that challenged the old masters and academic tradition and sent shockwaves through the French art world in the early 1860s. In the late 1870s and early 1880s, he shifted his focus and produced a different, though no less radical, body of work: stylish portraits, luscious still lifes, delicate pastels, intimate watercolors, and freely brushed scenes of suburban gardens and Parisian cafes. On view at the J. Paul Getty Museum October 8, 2019 through January 12, 2020, Manet and Modern Beauty explores for the first time in a major museum exhibition the artist’s last years, after his rise to notoriety in the 1860s and the formal launch of the Impressionist movement in the early 1870s. The exhibition will feature more than 90 works of art, including an impressive array of genre scenes, still lifes, pastels, and portraits of favorite actresses and models, bourgeois women of his acquaintance, his wife, and his male friends. |

Jesus Rafael Soto The Fourth Dimension Guggenheim Bilbao
Dates: October 18, 2019–February 9, 2020 All the information on the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is available at www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus - The idea of a “fourth dimension” is materialized in Soto’s dynamic and abstract works, especially in his large-scale participatory sculptures, the iconic Penetrables . - In addition to a large number of mural pieces, the exhibition includes characteristic examples from other series, such as Virtual Volumes , Extensions , and Progressions . - According to the artist, “In the Penetrables , the spectator walks through vertical threads or bars that fill the entire available space and make up the work. From that moment on, spectator and artwork are physically and inextricably entwined.” - The exhibition includes Soto’s celebrated Sphère Lutétia (1996), installed by the Museum’s pond for the four months of the exhibition. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Soto. The Fourth Dimension, a retrospective exhibition of the works of Jesús Rafael Soto (b. 1923, Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela; d. 2005, Paris). Organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in collaboration with the Atelier Soto in Paris, the show brings together over 60 works, including several of Soto’s large-scale participatory sculptures called Penetrables , some of his most iconic and important contributions to the recent history of art. In addition, the show includes a large number of historic paintings and mural works, which help to understand the fundamental role Soto played in the development of Kinetic Art from the early 1950s to the end of the 1960s, and to appreciate the development of his artistic practice up to the first decade of the 21st century.
