Sotheby's Art Impressionniste et Moderne

Art Impressionniste et Moderne 10 December 2015 Paris Sotheby’s Paris sale of Impressionist & Modern Art brought a total of €12,9M led by strong prices for works by modern masters of the 20th century and paintings and sculptures from prestigious private collections. Works by Marc Chagall continued to captivate collectors, led by Paysage à l’Isba, a late work embodying all the joyfulness of his art, which achieved €1,659,000. An exceptional work on paper by Joan Miró realised €1,263,000. Never previously offered at auction, this monumental painting was one of the finest works on paper by the artist seen on the market for some time. A group of 11 bronze statuettes celebrating the female nude by Aristide Maillol, from the collection of Pierre Jourdan-Barry, brought a combined total of €1,386,750, double the pre-sale low estimate. The surrealist section of the sale achieved excellent results as shown with the strong result of Oscar Dominguez’s El Soplo, which sold for €459,000.

AUCTION DETAILS The December auction of Impressionist and Modern Art in Paris features a selection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by major modern artists.  A powerful and important portrait,  Femme au châle (presumably of Fernande Olivier), painted by Picasso during his seminal Bateau-Lavoir period opens a very dynamic sale which also includes two masterpieces by Chagall.  The sale’s other highlights range from works by the Belgian symbolist master Spilliaert, an exquisite depiction of the Catalan port town of Collioure by Henri Martin, to fabulous period portraits by Van Dongen, superb surrealist works by Toyen, Dominguez and Miró, as well as rare bronze sculptures by Maillol and Rodin from prestigious private collections.
