MILLON RIVIERA NICE
Sotheby's New York The Collection of Edward Albee
The Collection of Edward Albee
For many, Sotheby’s September auction will offer a new window into Edward Albee’s life and creative mind. Sourced from artists, friends and galleries over several decades, the majority of the 100+ works on offer adorned the walls of Albee’s Tribeca loft, which he rehung often to explore new artistic connections. In keeping with his constant experimentation as a playwright, the collection focuses on the birth and evolution of Abstraction in 20th century art, and a highly-personal intellectual pursuit of the ephemeral and the elusive – from a stunning figural work by Milton Avery, to a whimsical relief by Jean Arp, a Bauhaus work by Wassily Kandinsky, and a group of geometric abstractions by John McLaughlin. |

Picasso in Private: Works from the Collection of Marina Picasso
5 February | London http://www.sothebys.com/ “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible,” said Picasso. The studio was his sanctuary, particularly as his fame grew. The photographs we have of Picasso at work bring us into this creative space, where, surrounded by his own work, he continually reinvented himself. Those moments of innovation are particularly palpable in his drawings – perhaps the most intimate of mediums. More than 100 such works on paper will be joined by 70 ceramics and terracotta sculptures, all from the personal collection of the artist’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso. Together with highlights from the Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary sale in London, a selection of these works will be on view at Sotheby’s New York from 13 to 17 January. —Meghan Dailey |

An exceptional work on paper by Joan Miró realised €1,263,000. Never previously offered at auction, this monumental painting was one of the finest works on paper by the artist seen on the market for some time. A group of 11 bronze statuettes celebrating the female nude by Aristide Maillol, from the collection of Pierre Jourdan-Barry, brought a combined total of €1,386,750, double the pre-sale low estimate. The Nude in the XX & XXI Century
Curated by Jane Neal, The Nude in the XX & XXI Century comprises works from a selection of artists whose practices engage with the historic iconography of The Nude and who use this subject to consider the place of the body within our changing cultural landscape. With the increased intersection of the fine art and fashion worlds visible throughout Western media, the concept of ‘Body Beautiful’ has become something to aspire to – a new icon for our age – but one robbed of religious significance, romantic context, or intellectual import. In reaction to this act of dehumanisation, artists have focused on The Nude as a ground upon which to project desires and a motif through which they might explore sexuality, gender politics, and the relationship between the body and society. For artists the Nude remains an almost endless source of inspiration, occupying a unique place in art history as well as in our collective unconscious.
