In Classical Greek mythology the god of love, Eros (Roman Cupid), was the love child of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, passion and procreation, and Ares, the infamous god of war. It was Eros who lit the flame of love and desire in the hearts of gods and humans. There are many theories as to why, throughout antiquity, Eros was often depicted riding a dolphin: in antiquity, as today, dolphins were perceived as affectionate towards humans. They were also symbols of divine protection and guidance, and may have represented how swiftly love moves.
