Photographers of Hungarian Heritage in France from the 1920s until the Present Day
Author: Júlia Cserba, Gabiella Cseh
Covering a time span from the 1920s to the present, this book provides an overview of works by Hungarian photographers in France throughout the previous century.
The volume comprises the most comprehensive list of émigré photographers, with significant oeuvres from various periods, an impressive undertaking whose scope alone fills a major gap in photographic history. Each of the fifty-five photographers is treated with an extensive description, beginning with a lexical introduction followed by detailed biographical information on their professional careers, personal motivations, social circles, and providing photographs typical of their oeuvre and/or major publications, drawing on archival and researched documents as well as information collected first-hand from relatives and personal friends.
In addition to iconic names in the field such as André Kertész, Brassaï, Robert Capa, Ergy Landau, François Kollar, Paul Almasy, Emeric Fehèr, or André Steiner, the book also delves further into the past hundred years to present lesser-known photographers that were their contemporaries, as well as emerging photographers from the later, younger generations.
A separate chapter is dedicated to close to thirty photographers who worked in France for variable periods of time but left comparatively little data aside from their artworks.
The book also contains an introduction by the prominent French photographic historian Michel Frizot and a detailed bibliography.
