ROME BY MILES HYMAN

Hyman spent his days in the city with eyes turned towards the Roman sky, focused on an architectural detail, on a face, a door in Trastevere or on the dome of a church in Piazza Navona, with the aim of depicting Rome for the Louis Vuitton Travel Book: Rome by Miles Hyman. The result is an invitation towards the real and virtual journey, enriched by intellectual stimulations and intense moments, which gives the readers an unprecedented image of the city.
Rome responds to Hyman’s approach by offering its own beauty without filters, becoming lively and vibrant, charged with ephemeral beauty, joyful, full of poetic elements in its everyday life.
“The Roman palette inspires me a great deal!” states Miles Hyman. “Its light, in the first place, but also its special colours, have set a gradual spell upon me: the facades, with their shades of ochre, golden yellow, blue and turquoise, not to mention the wide range of reds, each richer than the next”. Bright and deep colours that influence the artist in an unmistakable way. “Rome is part of those cities that you have to live with for a while before you can understand its charm. But beware, once you start to love, understand and finally capture the unique spirit of these cities, you’re already in love, and you will love them passionately forever”. Rome as depicted by Hyman has the features of a woman, elusive and mysterious, that you can meet on the corner of a street, in the shade of a terrace or on a balcony. Look away for a moment and you lose sight of her. This is Rome. The city’s inhabitants prevail over the monuments “I realise that this work about Rome could have been called Travel Book of the Romans. I absolutely wanted to capture the daily life of the inhabitants of this enchanting city with honesty and admiration — I am tempted to say ‘tenderness’.
Why did I want to stress the human element of the city? Because, for me, the key to the city is the striking contrast between its ephemeral life and the eternal”. The Istituto Centrale per la Grafica hosted the exhibition inside its Palazzo Poli, an iconic place in Rome, because the Trevi Fountain is its façade. The Institute promotes contemporary graphics in all its expressions, from Graphic Design of great masters to experimental experiences, from Graphic Novel to design, in the founding spirit of the unification of antique drawing and printing collections (Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe), to the activity, uninterruptedly in progress since the first decades of the 19th century, of the National Calcography and its Stamperia.

FROM OCTOBER 5TH TO NOVEMBER 11TH, THE ISTITUTO CENTRALE PER LA GRAFICA WILL HOST OVER 100 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY THE AMERICAN ARTIST, COMMISSIONED BY LOUIS VUITTON, AND SOME ESPECIALLY MADE FOR THE EXHIBITION IN ROME.

 

MILES HYMAN
Miles Hyman is an illustrator of periodicals and novels, most of them thrillers, he also writes comic stories.
From his drawings, it is clear that he could have become a writer with a style half way between that of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Joseph Conrad, or a film director.
His world evokes both the cinema and a certain type of literature, notably American, which he has helped to popularize with his adaptations; his illustrations for the graphic version of The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy remains a model of the genre, endorsed by the master himself. In his books, Miles Hyman’s lexicon is that of a filmmaker attracted by the mysteries of shadow and light: fields and counter-fields, close-ups and broad views are his card. Big cities, with their dark alleys and majestic buildings, have a special place in his world.”
They attract and fascinate me,” he says. “I want to draw their light, their shapes, their architecture and the people who populate them.” His debut book with Gallimard, adaptation of Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos, was published three years after his first book, L’Homme à Deux Têtes, which was published under a pseudonym.
He then became the official cover artist for Le Poulpe and the faithful companion of Jean-Bernard Pouy.
His works have also appeared on many newspapers and magazines, including Libération, Le Monde, Télérama, The New York Times and The New Yorker.

TRAVEL BOOK
The Travel Book collection published by Louis Vuitton invites to a kind of travel, be it real or virtual, by the intellectual stimulation or poignant moments.
Page after page, the works of renowned artists and young talents tell of foreign cities and countries.
The Travel Books offer a contemporary and original vision, describing both the sleepless megalopolises and the remote and inaccessible districts, they have no hesitation in crossing cultures and turning the artists’ eyes on worlds that are totally alien to them.
